Week-long activities to commemorate ‘World Environment Day’ culminate at GDC Beerwah

Srinagar, June 21: The Department of Environmental Sciences, Govt. The Degree College Beerwah, in collaboration with the Department of Botany and the NSS Unit, concluded the week-long activities organized to celebrate “World Environment Day under the slogan “One Earth – Living Sustainably by harmony with nature”, here.

The principal of the college, Prof. (Dr) FahmeedaBano inaugurated the program.

Speaking on this occasion, she highlighted the role of students and faculty members in promoting and creating a sustainable society by changing our lifestyles and ways of thinking. She also urged students to get actively involved in such kind of activities and act as ambassadors to bring about positive changes in society.

Earlier, the program started with a lecture given by an eminent speaker, Professor Javid Iqbal Ahmad, Division of Environmental Sciences (SKUAST-K). He highlighted the challenges humanity faces due to unsustainable practices and policies and discussed in detail their solutions.

Subsequently, Dr. Sami-Ullah, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Kashmir, delivered a lecture on “Sustainable Development and Our Responsibilities – Waste Management: Challenges and Solutions”.

In his speech, Dr. Sami-Ullah highlighted the problems that the world in general and J&K in particular are facing in municipal solid waste and wastewater management and discussed viable solutions to address the problem.

This was followed by the college’s NSS Cleanliness and Anti-Polythene Unit. In this campaign, the volunteers were not only made aware of the dangerous impact of polyethylene on the environment, but at the same time, demonstration courses were organized on this occasion.

Finally, on June 9 and 10, the Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with the NSS team of the college organized a quiz and an inter-college debate competition on the theme ‘Only One Earth’. In both activities, several students from different colleges participated. The college principal applauded the efforts of the program coordinator, Dr. Aftab Ahmad (HoD Environmental Science), and the NSS program manager, Dr. Firdous Ahmad Dar.

The entire program was sponsored by Saliq Enterprises, Srinagar.
