NATO to fire eight Russian diplomats suspected of malicious activity: report

In a major move, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) took the decision to fire eight Russian diplomats and halve the size of the Russian mission to the alliance. The decision was made in response to alleged malicious activity, informed Sky NewsSecurity and Defense Editor Deborah Haynes on Twitter. The eight diplomats in question, according to Haynes, are considered “undeclared intelligence officers” and will leave Brussels by the end of October. She further asserted that NATO would also cut the posts of two additional diplomats.

“NATO’s policy towards Russia remains consistent. We have stepped up our deterrence and defended in response to aggressive Russian actions, while remaining open to constructive dialogue,” Haynes said on Twitter, citing the alliance. The announced move comes just a day after NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged the alliance to strengthen relations with Russia to avoid another cold war or arms race. Speaking at an event hosted by the Brookings Institute and Georgetown University on Tuesday, October 5, Stoltenberg said the allies must speak to a “assertive Russia,” which he described as a threat to the United States. alliance and its allies and partners.

NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said relations between the Western bloc’s “transatlantic family” and Moscow had deteriorated. He said NATO’s approach to Russia would continue to be “deterrence and dialogue”, accusing Russia of sabotaging relations. Stoltenberg also said NATO’s efforts to persuade Russia’s neighbors Ukraine and Georgia to join the alliance must not be abandoned.

NATO chief worried about China’s regional expansion

The NATO Secretary General also expressed concern over China’s regional expansion and growing military power, saying the Asian country is building up its strong military capability year after year. It is worth mentioning here that Stoltenberg also met President Joe Biden at the White House to explore ways to deepen the transatlantic alliance and prepare for the NATO summit in Madrid to be held next year. The NATO chief informed President Biden that competition between major world powers is intensifying, as are cyber threats, terrorism and the security implications of climate change. It should be mentioned here that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an army made up of 28 European nations and two North American nations. The organization is responsible for the implementation of the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed on April 4, 1949.
