Gymnastics 4A: Elizabeth wins third consecutive team championship


THORNTON – The Elizabeth gymnastics team will not let go of its grip on the 4A standings.

On Friday at Thornton High School, the Cardinals posted a team score of 180.75 to walk away from the field and come home with the team trophy once again. The latter championship is Elizabeth’s third consecutive team title, fourth in the past five seasons and seventh overall.

Considering they’ve been at the top for several seasons, and last won a State Championship in Season C in April, just over six months ago, the Cardinals are without a doubt. the most dominant 4A team in recent memory.

“This team has had a record season,” said Elizabeth head coach Staci Folmar. “They have always scored more than any team in Elizabeth’s history. We have never been undefeated in our championship. We have had a wonderful season. And today they did what they had to do. Our motto this year has been “Trust, consistency and commitment”.

“We had to work really hard to be consistent in our commitment and constant in our confidence, and we did. These guys don’t take days off, they’re often together and they do it for each other.

The Cardinals had a 44.525 on beam, 43.225 on uneven bars, an excellent 46.6 on vault and an impressive 46.375 on floor. Their vault and floor scores were the two highest scores of any team in all cases.

By completing the triple round on Friday night, Elizabeth only became the sixth program in any classification to win three consecutive tag team championships.

“Our goal this season was to make Elizabeth’s story, whether it was in one event with the best team score of all time or over three rounds,” said Elle Mowbray, Senior Elizabeth. “This team did not give up. We did everything we could, put it all on display and walked out knowing everyone on our team was backing us. “

The last team other than Elizabeth to win the Class 4A first place trophy was Niwot in 2018. The Cougars finished second on Friday, with a team score of 178.125, having finished third in consecutive seasons after winning. won it all in 2018. Palmer Ridge finished third with a score of 177.625.
