English Language Day History:

The first form of English is called Old English or Anglo-Saxon, which appeared between 550 and 1066 AD. Old English developed from a collection of West Germanic dialects, often grouped into Anglo-Frisian or North Sea Germanic, and originally spoken along the coasts of Friesland, Lower Saxony and southern Jutland by Germanic peoples known in historical records as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes.

From the 8th to the 12th century, Old English gradually transformed by language contact into Middle English. Middle English is often arbitrarily defined as beginning with William the Conqueror’s conquest of England in 1066, but developed further in the period from the 1200s to 1450s. With the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, the now norsified Old English was subject to contact with Old French, especially with the Old Norman dialect.

The next period in English history was the period of modern English between the years 1500 and 1700 CE. Early Modern English was characterized by the Great Vowel Shift (1350–1700), inflectional simplification, and linguistic standardization. By the end of the 18th century, the British Empire had spread English across its colonies and geopolitical dominance. Commerce, science and technology, diplomacy, art and formal education have all contributed to making English the first truly global language. English has also facilitated international communication around the world.

The English Project launched the world’s first-ever English Language Day on October 13, 2009. English Language Day is celebrated to commemorate October 13, 1362, when Parliament was first opened to speech in English , instead of French. In the same Parliament, a statute of pleading was approved which allowed the members of the debate to use the English language. This made English the official language of law and law-making.
