Biden beat Trump in second presidential debate, majority in poll finds

Most registered voters said Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden performed better than President Donald Trump in the second presidential debate, according to a POLITICO/Morning Consult poll released on Friday.

Fifty-four percent of voters who watched Thursday’s debate said Biden was the best, while 39% said Trump did. Eight percent of voters who watched were unsure or had no opinion on who did better.

Both candidates’ performances have improved with voters since the first presidential debate. In one September 30 POLITICO / Morning Consult Pollonly 50% of voters said Biden performed better while 34% of voters said Trump.

A much more subdued debate than the first, Thursday night had fewer interruptions, leaving room for real political discussion as well as attacks and rebuttals from both candidates.

Sixty-five percent of voters said the candidates mostly respected each other’s time, compared with 10% who said the first presidential debate.

Trump interrupted Biden a total of 128 times during September’s 90-minute debate, according to the slate, a strategy that Trump did not pursue in the last debate. However, most registered voters (61% – 21%) still said Trump was more disruptive than Biden during Thursday’s debate.

The committee debates decided to mute the microphones during parts of the debate as a way to combat constant interruptions, despite opposition from the Trump campaign.

Fifty-seven percent of registered voters strongly or somewhat support phasing out oil industry overtime and transitioning to renewable energy, which Biden has said he plans to do.

During a back-and-forth between Biden and Trump on Biden’s position on fracking on Thursday, Biden said he would oil industry transition “because it must be replaced by renewable energies.”

“I would stop giving to the oil industry – I would stop giving them federal grants. You won’t give federal subsidies for gas and… solar and wind. Why are we giving it to the oil industry? Biden said Thursday.

Seventy percent of registered voters also said the country was headed down the wrong path while only 30% said the country was headed in the right direction.

Of the 1,848 registered voters surveyed in that poll, 58% disapprove of Trump’s job as president, compared to 40% who approve.

The poll was taken on October 23 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
