Baru donates 2,400 reading books to boost English literacy

Baru hands over English reading books to SK Director Belipat Kamsiah Puat.

LAWAS (June 12): Ba Kelalan Assemblyman Baru Bian has donated 2,400 English-language books to 12 schools in Bukit Sari as part of an ongoing effort to promote and support the use of the English language among school children.

Baru, who is also an MP for Selangau, said he has been donating reading books to primary schools in his constituency since 2011.

“I feel that if I can, I also want to share this blessing with other schools. Not only Ba Kelalan schools but also Bukit Sari schools. I would like to encourage people to read in English or Bahasa Malay” , he said yesterday during the simple delivery of the books at a leading hotel here.

Baru pointed out that English is a very important language, although there is currently a debate about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob’s push for Bahasa Malaysia.

He added that while Bahasa Malaysia is the national language, the English language is widely used in business and communication.

“I think we should emphasize English as well,” he added.

The 12 schools that received English reading books yesterday were SK Ulu Merapok, SK Merapok, SK Kampung Seberang, SK Ladang Baru, SK Kerangan, SK Awat-Awat, SK Aru Baru, SK Kampung Lintang, SK Sundar, SK Luagan , SK Belipat and SK Punang.
