The wheel of time Episode 6 sees the arrival of Amyrlin Seat, the powerful leader of the Aes Sedai. Once a member of the Blue Ajah, Siuan has come a long way since joining the organization. However, she kept a soft spot for the woman with whom she entered the fraternity.

And after watching the latest installment, it’s clear that Siuan and Moiraine’s feelings for each other go beyond friendship or duty. Although they both put their responsibilities first, they have spent time together over the years. Their expressions alone suggest that they are in love with each other, and both dream of a future where they can simply exist without their other commitments.

Unfortunately, the events of Episode 6 make this wish increasingly unlikely. With Moiraine exiled from the White Tower, it might be some time before fans see the couple together again. But how far is their relationship drawn from The wheel of time series of books?

Although Moiraine and Siuan do not share any explicitly romantic scenes in The wheel of time books, Robert Jordan alludes to a more intimate relationship between the two characters. In particular, the prequel novel, New spring, has many lines that could be interpreted this way.

As Den of Geek points out, the deceased author often calls the two women “pillow friends”. It would be a strange way to describe someone who didn’t share a bed together. And the outlet goes on to quote one of Jordan’s old blog posts, where it clarifies the meaning of the term:

“Pillow friends aren’t just good friends. Oh they are too, but they also get hot and sweaty together and ruffle the sheets something fierce.

With Jordan’s words in mind, it seems The wheel of time The TV series simply expands on what’s already there rather than adding an entirely new relationship. Despite everything, the scenes between Siuan and Moiraine rekindled conversations around the latter’s sexual orientation.

Even before The wheel of time With Episode 6 dropped, fans have often wondered about Moiraine’s sexual orientation in the books. Jordan’s words seem to confirm that she is interested in women, but the novels also see her and Siuan forming relationships with men. So, is Moiraine bisexual, lesbian or something else?

In an interview with TVLine, Rosamund Pike delved into the discussions surrounding her character’s sexuality. She did not give a clear answer, but instead admitted that there was a lot of room for interpretation in New spring:

“This is the backstory where we have this story that I told you about, with Gitara Moroso, the woman of the White Tower who had the vision. We see [Moiraine] and Siuan training, we see his Lan bond, how these two met. And there’s that line that fans have a lot of talk about, namely that Siuan and Moiraine were “pillow friends.” And what is the meaning of this? And there is a lot of debate about: Is Moiraine bisexual? Is she a lesbian? There is plenty of room for discussion.

At the end, The wheel of time probably doesn’t need to define Moiraine’s sexuality – especially in a world where such labels probably don’t exist. However, it’s nice to see the fantasy series embrace same-sex relationships onscreen rather than just alluding to them.

The wheel of time is currently airing on Prime Video.
